Client Background
True North, a leading Indian private equity firm with over $2 billion in investments across 18 portfolio companies, was in the midst of a digital transformation.We were part of the team responsible to develop a strategic roadmap for digitalisation and conceptualise an enterprise application.
This app, envisioned as a future product, could potentially address the needs of other alternative investment firms.

Objectives
To help the organisation streamline processes digitally and collaborate across levels(vertically) and teams(horizontally).
Design an enterprise solution for the Alternate Investment space (such as Private Equity), to uncover investment opportunities and risks comprehensively.

Design Approach
Our strategy was to prioritize a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) that would capture the core functionality. We focused on designing the essential business workflows and equipping them with productivity tools. This initial version would serve as a springboard for further development. By gathering user feedback through internal testing, we could refine the application suite into a more polished and feature-rich solution.

Our research included competitive analysis especially to better understand the features and value adds of productivity tools.
One-on-one interviews with experts from every level within the organisation hierarchy, provided qualitative insight into key emotional/procedural points of users’ journeys in the various workflows.

Visual story telling
We meticulously detailed each workflow and mapped them out using flow diagrams. Such visual aids helped stakeholders align within their teams and also validate our understanding. It highlighted gaps and areas of improvements that created a shared vision for the apps, moving ahead.

Creating Structure
Having gathered extensive data through research, we transitioned to structuring the information architecture. Leveraging insights from interviews and surveys, we created a comprehensive sitemap.
This sitemap served two crucial functions: firstly, it visualised the optimal structure for all core workflows, ensuring intuitive navigation for users across the application suite.
Secondly, it provided a clear blueprint for integrating productivity features seamlessly within the workflows.

Visual Design
Maintaining a consistent UI experience was paramount, not just for the user-facing frontend but also for the backend system.
Recognizing the data-intensive nature of the screens, we proposed a light color palette. We used white as a base and incorporated the client's brand blue as an accent color. This combination minimized eye strain and ensured the data remained the focal point.
Furthermore, to translate the style guide into reality, we built a comprehensive component library. This library not only ensured consistency but also streamlined the development process. To add a touch of personality and visual interest to the UI, we incorporated beautifully crafted business-related illustrations.

Status today
Our successful collaboration with True north culminated in the handover of a well-designed and developed enterprise application. Following a thorough QA process, we delivered a solution that not only met their initial needs but also laid the groundwork for future scalability.
In collaboration with key stakeholders, we also selected the name "Kelp" for the application.
Today, Kelp has evolved significantly and is available in the market as Kelp Global, empowering investment firms to streamline workflows and unlock new levels of efficiency.Have a similar project or requirement?
